(LAW GAT)
Eligibility Criteria for appearance
in the LAW GAT by HEC:
- To be eligible to appear in the courts in Pakistan, the Higher Education Commission (HEC) has introduced a system of enrollment to allow the candidates to start practice and for this purpose, the person having passed Bachelor’s degree in Law from a university recognized by HEC and Punjab Bar Council (PBC) are eligible to apply for the said test.
- Applicants will have a maximum of three chances to clear the Law-GAT test. HEC will conduct the test thrice a year
- Applicants will have to meet other criteria, if any, as per the Rules and Regulations of PBC.
Minimum Qualification Criteria of
Successful candidate in the LAW GAT
- A 50% score is required to pass the Law-GAT
Registration For HEC LAW GAT
Candidates who have passed Bachelor’s degree in Law or equivalent from a university recognized by HEC/PBC can register themselves online through HEC’s Website http://etc.hec.gov.pk. for the enrolment for appearance in the LAW GAT. Applications can be submitted by the applicants online at the HEC website. The embargo of LAW-GAT conducted by the HEC is necessary to cross it for all LLB graduates before entering the legal profession.
Procedure of LAW GAT:
The test, conducted by the HEC, will consist of Multiple Choice Questions (MCOs). Applicants before to appear in the test have to register through HEC online registration process and after such registration are required to download their Roll Number Slip through web portal http://etc.hec.gov.pk, a week before the test date and then they shall be eligible to appear for Law GAT.
LAW GAT Syllabus:
The criteria to success in exams of the LAW GAT is, mix in nature, comprising of different subjects, amongst them, the division of the marks have been made. The HEC has recently announced the syllabus for said exams which includes chapters’ details of six different subjects. The aggregate mark comprising on these subjects have been fixed as 100 with 100% MCQs on the following subjects:
- Constitution
- Jurisprudence
- Civil Procedure Code
- Criminal Law
- Law of Evidence
- Professional Ethics
Marks Division:
Although the total marks are comprised of given subject choices but for the purposes of preparation and clarity in the division of these marks, the following categories have been provided:

HEC-LAW GAT Test Centers
For facility to the candidates to appear in the LAW GAT Test, the HEC has set up its different examination centers in the entire country on availability basis. The following centers facilities the candidates to appear and get through the test conducted by the HEC:
- Islamabad Lahore Karachi Sukkur Abbottabad
- Quetta Multan Hyderabad Turbat Bahawalpur
- Peshawar Muzaffarabad Faisalabad Gilgit
From the given choices, the Applicants may select any test Centre in their area to appear on the selective choices with condition that the conduct of the exams shall be subject to when the minimum numbers of the Applicants are not less than 100 and once registration from any center has been selected, the Applicants / candidates have no option to go for any other center to change its registration.
Date of LAW GAT:
To conduct exams on regular basis, the HEC announced date of test according to the schedule set for the same. However, due to certain circumstances not to conduct test, the date of the test is rescheduled by the HEC.
